It’s official: Today was the third-warmest September day on record.
The high temperature at Sea-Tac sprang up to 93 degrees late this afternoon—a mark eclipsed at the airport just twice before in the month of September (Seattle hit 98 on Sept. 2, 1988 and 94 on Sept. 7, 1981). In the process, the city established a new record high temperature for the day, sailing past the previous Sept. 11 high of 87 degrees from 2009.
In addition, today tied for the warmest day in Seattle this year—we also reached 93 on June 30. The toasty late-summer heat, fueled by a thermal trough parked off the Washington coast and a massive dome of high pressure overhead, should gradually subside tomorrow as some marine air trickles into the Sound. Still, the day will wind up much warmer than normal, with the mercury topping out in the mid 80s—right on par with the record high for the day of 85, logged back in 1975.
Don’t put away those shorts just yet.
