July Ends as One of Seattle’s Driest

July has officially earned its place in history.

No measurable rain fell at Sea-Tac Airport last month, making it one of Seattle’s driest Julys on record—along with July 1960 and July 1958, both of which also skated by without any measurable precipitation. In addition, July 2013 goes into the books as just the sixth rain-free month ever observed at the airport—August 2012, September 1991, September 1975 and the two additional dry Julys are the others. Weather records at Sea-Tac stretch back to 1945.

Yesterday also marked the 34th consecutive day without measurable rain for Seattle, with the last rainfall of 0.01 inches or greater occurring on June 27. It was a close call during the evening hours, however, as a band of thunderstorms scraped by to the east of the city. The dry streak will be on the ropes once again today, thanks to an upper level area of low pressure capable of generating a few more showers. Additional light rain is also possible on Friday, although it’s by no means a slam dunk. Should the showers skip over Seattle both days, we would be within shouting distance of last year’s run of 48 straight dry days—not to mention the all-time record of 51 from 1951.
