Sun At Last

Brighter times are just around the corner.

Our recent spate of cool, rainy weather is nearly finished, as the broad area of low pressure that’s dogged us for days finally pulls east. In its place, a bulging ridge of high pressure over California will nose northward into the area, bringing back a healthy dose of sunshine—along with the potential for some 70-degree weather.

Talk about music to the ears for waterlogged Western Washington, where it hasn’t exactly been a day at the beach in quite some time.

Following the chart-busting gullywashers of last weekend, it’s continued to rain at times right on into October, with Seattle racking up a healthy half-inch of precipitation in the first two days alone. Heck, we haven’t even managed a day-long dry spell since last Thursday, when the sun made its first full-fledged appearance of fall. Adding to the misery, today marked the 12th straight day of below-average temperatures in Seattle, with the mercury last rising into normal territory (the mid to upper 60s) on Sept. 21.

Seattle will finally dry out this weekend, with sunny skies bringing out the best in the fall foliage around town.

Fortunately, change is on the way as we move toward the start of the weekend, with the threatening clouds that have frowned on the city for most of today thinning out as evening sets in. By sundown, skies should be at least partly starry, with temperatures lowering into the mid 40s as the night progresses.

With lots of leftover moisture still milling around in the atmosphere, plenty of places will be under the gun for fog tomorrow morning—especially south of Seattle toward Tacoma and Olympia. Other spots will wake up to partly cloudy skies, with everyone enjoying mostly sunny conditions by early afternoon. Boosted by ample sunshine, temperatures will begin an upward spiral, climbing to 65 degrees tomorrow.

On Saturday, with high pressure locked in place overhead, we’ll take things a step further, warming into the upper 60s during the second part of the day under sunny skies. Readings in the low 70s are even possible from roughly Seattle south and east as a spectacular fall weekend unfolds.

The pleasant weather holds through most of Sunday, with highs again creeping into the upper 60s across Puget Sound, albeit with less sunshine as a cold front shuffles toward the state. By Sunday night, it’ll be overcast enough to qualify as mostly cloudy, with rain moving in shortly thereafter. Amounts, however, look pretty light—just a tenth of an inch or so for most.

After last weekend’s washout, who can complain?
