Rainy Weather Kicks Off June’s Final Week

It was only a matter of time before we got busted.

After sneaking in three weeks of generally dry weather undetected, Mother Nature finally caught on to Seattle’s plan to thwart climatology and make this June significantly drier than normal.

Perhaps it was the inch of rain missing from the till that tipped her off?

Sea-Tac Airport has recorded just 0.20 inches of rain this month, in contrast to the 1.30 inches that normally dampens the gauge by this point in time. While that’s made for a rather enjoyable June, in Mother Nature’s book it means we’ve strayed too far from the beaten path—and it’s time to be brought in line.

Cue the good old rain.

The final week of June promises to start off on a gray note for Seattle, with rain expected through Wednesday.
The last week of June promises to start off on a gray note for Seattle, with rain expected through Wednesday.

The drippy weather we’ve seen all of today will continue this evening, eventually consolidating into steadier bands of rainfall overnight as round one of our punishment gets underway. (For northern parts of Seattle, it’s really round two, as Mother Nature snuffed out the spate of nice weather there with nearly an inch of rain on Thursday.) With plenty of clouds and a steady stream of mild air from the south, low temperatures will only bottom out near 60 degrees—much warmer than average minimum of 53.

The showers hold over into Monday morning before easing up around noontime, leading to a tranquil afternoon of mostly cloudy skies and high temperatures in the upper 60s. We could even see a few sunbreaks late in the day.

The chastisement resumes early Tuesday as a more robust slug of moisture barrels into the area, dumping up to a quarter-inch of rain around the Sound. For Sea-Tac, this should be enough to make the day June’s wettest, surpassing the 0.12 inches measured last Thursday.

Scattered showers continue into Wednesday, with occasional sunbreaks allowing thermometers to creep into the lower 70s. By Thursday, the scale tips toward partly sunny skies, warming Seattle back into the 75-degree range.

Friday is a toss-up at this point, with a weather system over the Pacific spinning close enough to the coastline to renew the threat of clouds and showers later in the day.

Come on, Mother Nature, isn’t the soggy start to this week punishment enough?
